Really?
Is this something that everyone knew?
Social security office is open, tax commissioner office is open, post office is open… but not the DMV?
So, my employer thinks I must be an illegal immigrant or something because the information I gave them 3 years ago is no longer sufficient…
Let me back up…
3 years ago I was hired by a company that originally asked for a passport for ID, I explained to them at that time that I never had one, they said that an ID and another form of government issued identification would be fine. They asked for my social security card and/or birth certificate.
Let me back up again…
6 years ago I was a college student. I mostly lived out of my car and couch surfed at friends apartments because well… what self respecting newly turned adult would really want to live at home… even if they did or did not have a sucky low paying job?. So one day I went to a friends store and thought I would only be a min or two… two min turned into two hours and before I knew it I had forgotten that I left my purse and book bag with my most valuable objects inside my car, in the front seat. Not a smart move, I know… I’ve beat myself up enough over it. ANYWAYS. My social security card was in my purse…
Long story short, I never got around to replacing my card. Since then I have had multiple jobs, gotten married, health insurance, surgeries, opened new bank accounts… a whole bunch of stuff… all of which ask for my SS number but I’ve always been able to get around providing a card for via my birth certificate and/or marriage certificate.
So back to my original story… I’ve worked for this company for 3 years… and they are just now getting around to letting me know that they think I’m illegally working or have a false ID because my drivers license still has my maiden name on it but my marriage certificate has my new LEGAL name and they cannot figure out who I am. Seriously? I went to the SS office today and the lady who helped me only needed to see my ID and my marriage certificate to figure out I needed to change my name… her only question was how I wanted my name to appear on my new card. And let us not forget that Uncle Sam accepts my hard earned tax paying money each month as well… with my new name. 🙂
After all the stuff at the SS office is done I actually had to ask someone where the DMV was (we just moved to the area)… I get 2 different answers from the same person and then I just figure I would google it on my phone. (so much for a little human interaction like the olden days.) Google says the DMV tag office is .5 miles away. Yay! (or so I thought). I get there and when it says DMV tag office… they really mean county administration building where you can apply for a tag for your car among many other things… none, however, are where I actually need to be to renew my drivers license. Luckily, I find someone who works for the city and ask him for directions to the (real) DMV… he starts to tell me and as I’m walking away another employee stops me… she tells me all the DMV’s are closed on Mondays. WTF.
Saddened… I left the building and went to a BBQ place around the corner and ate my weight in pulled pork sandwiches. Life feels better now. But not my tummy.
